ORGANISATIONS & LINKS

The Railway Engineers Forum (REF) is a multi-disciplinary body drawn from those Professional Institutions with strong railway interests. The aim of the REF is to harmonise the various strengths of the constituent Institutions in devising and implementing their programmes of activities in support of the railway community.

This will encompass conferences, seminars, lectures, training, information services, publications and statements of policy to Government and other Regulatory Bodies. The harmonisation process will aim to avoid duplication of effort and/or duplication of events, to promote joint ventures whenever this is advantageous and to maximise the visibility of such activities to the widest possible audience.

The IRO exists to advance and promote the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the railways by improving the technical and general skills, knowledge and competency of those involved in rail operations.

Now in its 10th year, the IRO is seen as the organisation of choice for those seeking to develop their career within the rail sector, with membership opening the door to a wealth of professional expertise, networking opportunities and events and a programme of courses tailored specifically to the needs of the industry.

The IRO’s core provision, the Professional Development Programme (PDP), is delivered in conjunction with leading education provider Glasgow Caledonian University and offers the following nationally recognised and accredited qualifications:

• IRO Certificate of Higher Education in Railway Operational Management;
• IRO Diploma of Higher Education in Railway Operational Management;
• IRO Degree in Railway Operational Management.

All courses are delivered through a tried and trusted combination of distance learning and direct tutorials from leading professionals within the rail sector. Shorter, bespoke courses are also available across the academic year.

The IRO also recognises the important role the younger element has to play in shaping the future of the industry and works closely with the Young Railway Professionals in supporting the training and developmental needs of its members.

Institution of Mechanical Engineers

With a 160-year heritage supporting us, today's Institution is a forward-looking, campaigning organisation. By working with leading companies, universities and think tanks, we create and share knowledge to provide government, businesses and the public with fresh thinking and authoritative guidance on all aspects of mechanical engineering.

We truly believe we can improve the world through engineering. So the Institution finds and nurtures new talent, helping engineers build their careers and take on the challenges that, when solved, will make a difference to all of us.

In the UK, engineering has achieved great successes, but in a quiet way. We're looking to shout about the achievements of our members and the industry, taking a positive, inspiring message into schools and out into the media.  By being independent of both government and business, and avoiding strategic relationships with single-issue bodies or pressure groups, we can deliver genuinely impartial advice in a passionately committed manner.

Visit the Railway Civil Engineers’ Association.

The Association was founded in 1921 and has evolved to keep pace with changes in the UK’s railway industry.

In 1997 the Association reconstituted itself, broadened membership and became an Associated Society of the Institution of Civil Engineers, to enable it to serve the needs of engineers in the new railway industry which has emerged from the privatisation of British Railways into Railtrack and then with the creation of Network Rail in 2004.

The Association exists to foster continuing professional development and the exchange of knowledge and experience between railway engineers by way of meetings, technical papers, site visits to engineering works and discussions about railway engineering. Our areas of interest not only include main line, but also Metros, London Underground and light rail.

We work closely with other engineering disciplines through the Railway Engineering Forum and Young Railway Professionals to develop coherent strategies for the UK rail network and to foster training and development of engineers at all levels.
