On Thursday 4th February. Railways Minister, Chris Mole MP addressed the launch dinner of the Young Railway Professionals at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in Westminster.
A 150 strong gathering of young operators and engineers from mechanical, electrical and signalling backgrounds gathered to celebrate the new Young Railway Professionals initiative where the younger member groups of the Institutions of Railway Operators, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Railway Signal Engineers and the Permanent Way Institution all joined forces to extend networking opportunities and a better cross-discipline interface between engineers and operators and put a real emphasis on building and strengthen railway careers.
In the keynote speech, the minister explained the exciting developments with the future of railways in the UK and that there was no better time for the group to be launched. He went on to say that we have a huge ability to influence and impact the industry going forward in our respective professionals and that working together to deliver passenger needs along with greener and more efficient railways.
Back in 2006 the IRO Young Professionals was founded, when Mark Hopwood (then Operations Director of London Lines) addressed the inaugural event with 35 or so present. Almost four years later, it is really encouraging to see that similar groups of the railway professionals institutions are now coming together and forging closer relationships for the good of careers and industry under the YRP banner.
The new chairman of the Young Railway Professionals is south east area council member, Robert Mullen. He oversees the organisation and the will lead it's evolution to meet members needs and to ensure that both graduate and non graduate young professionals in the rail industry have an opportunity to learn, network and to develop.
The evening was a splendid event, organised by the YRP Committee with the help of the IMechE staff to whom we are very grateful. The Young Railway Professionals have a number of events planned over the course of the year, including an annual dinner, a number of visits and lectures. Membership is automatic with membership of respective professional institutions.
