The presentation initially reflects on the inception of mainline AC electrification in the UK and examines the evolution of the different system designs as applied to the main routes. The basic system elements, their configuration and components are reviewed looking at materials, composition and features. Facets of the design and construction of overhead line equipment are examined and the key issues to be addressed for new electrification are considered and explained.
