IRSE: Signalling Equipment Workshop

Over previous years the IRSE YM have run a number of workshops to help young engineers prepare for the IRSE professional exams. So far this year we have run a principles workshop focused towards module 2 and 3 of the exam and now we are pleased to offer a chance to get a closer look at some common signalling equipment used on the UK network to help you prepare for the module 5 examination in October.

Catalis are one of the leading signal engineering training providers in the UK and their Derby site has a wide range of signalling systems for us to demonstrate on the day. We intend to incorporate as much of their equipment into the day as possible, including:

  • Interlockings (SSI, RRI, Westpac/ GEC geographical, Mechanical)
  • Point machines (HPSS, 63, Clamplock, HW)
  • Level Crossing (MCB, AHB, AOCL, CCTV)
  • Train Detection (DC, AC, TI21, Aster)
  • Miscellaneous equipment (Signals, AWS, TPWS, Location cases, REBs)

We try to focus these events on the needs of the people who attend and we are not intending this event to be purely an exam workshop. Many people who come to these workshops are not actively preparing to sit the exams in the same year, or even at all, but are simply wanting to get a little more knowledge and experience in signal engineering. We intend to split the workshop into 4 groups depending on experience and what they wish to get out of the day to ensure that there is something for everyone who attends.

For those of you who are focused on the 2010 exam we will make available a mock exam based on range of typical exam questions. You can submit your answers to these questions in advance for some feedback on your performance and we will produce some example solutions.

Thanks to Catalis, the weekend is free to attend and a buffet lunch will be provided. However attendees will have to arrange their own travel. We intend to start with tea and coffee at 9:45 – 10:15, and are due to finish at around 17:00. The training centre is a short walk / taxi ride from Derby station. You will find details on how to find the venue at http://www.catalis.com/contact-us/training-centres/.
