Network Rail graduatesThe Young Railway Professionals have come together through the younger member sections of several industry professional bodies.

 

Membership to our parent organisations are generally open to anyone working in, or associated with, the railway industry. Membership is also open to those who aspire to work in the railways.

Our current membership is drawn from a wide range of companies including freight and passenger operators, light rail and metro/urban systems, rolling stock and infrastructure providers, infrastructure renewal and maintenance companies, as well as heritage railways and the monitoring, regulatory, consumer and safety bodies/authorities.

IRO logoInstitution of Railway Operators

Benefits of membership:

  • A programme of lectures, visits and social events around the country.
  • Free subscription to Rail Professional magazine and Railnews each month.

Grades of membership:

  • Student: Available to full-time students at school, college or university who may be considering a career in the railway industry. £10 per annum.
  • Affiliate: Available to railway industry employees or those connected with, or interested in, the profession who wish to improve their competence and/or prepare for career enhancement. £30.00 per annum – No cost if your company is a corporate member.
  • Associate: Available upon successful completion of the diploma course of study, OR: After at least three years’ relevant railway operating experience with evidence of working in roles requiring the application of knowledge as displayed on the IRO website. Associate: £40.00 per annum – No cost if your company is a corporate member.
  • Member: Available upon successful completion of the BSc course of study, OR: After at least five years’ relevant railway operating experience with evidence of working in roles requiring the application of knowledge as displayed on the IRO website. Member: £70.00 per annum.

 

Institution of Mechanical Engineers

Grades of membership:

  • Affiliate: For all those interested in mechanical engineering, including undergraduate students and apprentices.
  • Associate: Graduates with an appropriate degree.
  • Member:  Membership is tied to registration as a Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer or Engineering Technician. All registration categories comprise an academic base and period of Initial Professional Development (IPD).

Grades of membership:

  • Student: If you are undertaking an appropriate training scheme leading to an appointment within the signalling profession or are receiving regular and relevent training within the profession, you may be considered for Student membership.
  • Accredited Technician: You will need to demonstrate that you are competent in signalling or telecommunications engineering techniques through a competency assessment scheme such as the IRSE licencing scheme.
  • Associate: A member who is engaged in, connected with or interested in the profession. They may be actively involved in the promotion, development and practice of the profession, but may not have a specific technical background. A safety, quality or training professional may apply for this grade of membership, as might a railway operator or those engaged in the manufacture of railway equipment.
  • Fellow and Member: The normal route is through academic qualification to Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or non-UK equivalent level and either passing the IRSE's examination or with equivalent experience. Signal and telecommunications engineers who have held a position of senior responsibility within the profession for a number of years may also apply. For Fellow, applicants must have had a number of years superior technical/managerial responsibility. Applicants may be called for interview by senior representatives of the Institution.
  • Associate Member: These are members who have normally completed a recognised signal engineering training scheme and passed the IRSE's examination. Alternatively, they will have satisfied the academic standard required for the Engineering Technician section of the Enginering Council (UK) or non-UK equivalent and have experience within the profession, but may not have completed the necessary period for exercising responsibility required for the Member level.
  • Companion: This grade is for persons who by their association with the profession or through their occupation in a position of eminence wishes to further the objectives of the IRSE. Companions are normally admitted by recommendation of the IRSE Council.

Grades of membership:

  • Student: If you are currently studying.
  • Associate: You will be working in a related field or simply have a passion for engineering and technology. You may not have an engineering qualification, but will still value involvement with the IET.
  • Member: To join the IET as a Member you must have achieved the required standard of knowledge and understanding.
  • Fellow: In order to achieve Fellowship, applicants must clearly demonstrate successful leadership or outstanding service to the profession over an extended period, normally not less than five years.
